MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A million dollar request was made by Bibb County Sheriff David Davis, and approved by the Macon-Bibb County Board of Commissioners to improve jail conditions.

The request comes after four inmates escaped from the Bibb County Jail on October 16, along with potential issues within the jail raised by the Sheriff.

“Collapsed sewer drains, the air condition system tears up, or you have something else back there,” says Sheriff Davis.

The million dollars won’t just cover anticipatory issues. The Sheriff says there are problems in the building that need to be addressed now. One of which includes fixing doors he says inmates have broken.

“The inmates have learned how to compromise them. So now we’re having to wield those plates shut, so they won’t be tampered with anymore,” said Sheriff Davis.

The transfer won’t cost taxpayers anything. The million dollars will come from the commissary fund. A fund that generates revenue through inmates spending money on telephone and vending services.
