MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) -Communities across Middle Georgia celebrated servicemen and women on Friday ahead on Veterans Day on Saturday.

Middle Georgia State University and Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller, came together to honor those who have served and are currently serving.

One of honored was Major Kevin Gunerman, a veteran who now serves in the Bibb County School District as a JROTC Instructor. Serving runs in his families blood.

“My father was in the army for many many years,” says Gunerman, whose brother also joined the Navy. Gunerman’s daughter is concluding her officer candidate school at the Marine Corp.

Gunerman served in Desert Storm and Afghanistan. He said serving isn’t a job, it’s a calling.

“It’s a very dangerous occupation. Especially if you’re in battle, but it’s so satisfying,” says Gunerman.

The event was held at the Coleman Hill Monument, honoring the 151st Machine Gun Battalion and 42nd Rainbow Division, who lost their lives in World War I.

Westside High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC students conducted the posting of the colors.
