Johnson County High School football team displays academic excellence

If they meet certain requirements, the Johnson County High School football team could have both the valedictorian and salutatorian for the Class of 2023.

WRIGHTSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) –The Johnson County High School football team finished the regular season 7-3, with a 5-0 region record, claiming back-to-back region titles. But the Trojans’ seniors have not only excelled on the gridiron but also in the classroom.

If they meet certain requirements, the Trojan football team’s senior class could include the valedictorian and salutatorian for the graduating Class of 2023. The team aims to challenge the stereotype that football student-athletes aren’t among the brightest in their class.

“I don’t really believe in that stereotype. We have a bunch; I mean, if you take a walk around and just look, you’ll find that probably 60% of our football team are students in honors classes and are taking advanced courses,” said Brantley Martin, a potential candidate for salutatorian for the Class of 2023. “…A bunch of people think about valedictorian, they get like this nerd kind of looking thing, but it’s not, it’s really not.”

“To me, it just means don’t judge a book by its cover, you might be seeing that not all football players are as smart as other players, but you never really know. Just get to know the person, and show them how smart they really are,” said Joshua Taylor, one of the top 5 students in the Class of 2023. “But my image is to prove all the people wrong.”

“A lot of us are actually not committed to play football. We’re going to college, and we’re going to pursue something that is not football related,” said Benvonte Murray, a potential candidate for valedictorian for the Class of 2023.

The Trojans have done an excellent job embodying what a student-athlete truly means. Now, the athletic side of the Trojans will be on full display in the End Zone Game of the Week as Johnson County takes on Washington-Wilkes in the first round of the GHSA A Division II bracket on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Herschel Walker Field.
