Mom to Mom: St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun rock hunt

Today on Mom to Mom, bring the magic of St. Patrick’s Day to life with leprechaun rocks. As we all know, those mischievous leprechauns are always sneaking around back yards, dropping things as they go. The stuff they leave behind can be a real nuisance, but kids love searching for them. By the end of this craft, you’ll have a batch of your very own with hidden treasure inside.

To make leprechaun rocks, you’ll need:

  • Baking soda (2 cups)
  • Water (1/2 cup)
  • Green food coloring
  • Gold Coins*
  • A mixing bowl
  • A sheet pan
  • Parchment paper
  • Vinegar

*If your pot of gold is empty, you can substitute with coins from the dollar store or a craft store.

Now that you have your supplies pour the baking soda into your bowl. Next, slowly mix in the water. It should have a crumbly texture. You don’t want the mixture to be too wet. Form a ball and stick your plastic coin in the middle. Now repeat that process until you run out of material. This recipe should made about five rocks.

Place your rocks onto a tray lined with parchment paper and stick it in the freezer overnight. By the morning, they’ll be ready for your leprechaun rock hunt! Now the fun part. Hide the rocks and let your kids run around trying to find them. Once they’ve all been found, they can be dissolved with a magic mixture of food dye and vinegar.
