Milledgeville residents have chance to speak out on proposed millage rate hike at upcoming hearings

The City of Milledgeville announced Thursday a proposed 17.57% property tax increase over the rollback millage rate for 2023.

MILLEDGEVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The City of Milledgeville announced Thursday a proposed 17.57% property tax increase over the rollback millage rate for 2023.

If approved, the millage rate would climb from 10.12 to 12.12 mills and would mark the first change in five years, according to a City of Milledgeville news release.

“Each year, the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Milledgeville review the assessed value for property tax purposes of taxable of taxable property in the city,” the release stated.

Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate be calculated to generate the same revenue as the previous year if there are no reassessment changes.

“The budget adopted by the Mayor and Aldermen requires that a millage rate higher than the rollback millage rate,” the release stated. “Therefore, before the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Milledgeville can set the final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on these increases.”

The city announced the hearings will coincide with regular council meetings and will all be held in the Council Chambers of City Hall, located at 119 East Hancock Street, at the following dates and times:

  • Tuesday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. (UPDATE: The city says it made an error on the original news release, which listed November 7 as the first date hearing.)
  • Tuesday, November 21 at 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, November 28 at 5:30 p.m.
