WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) — A firearm was discovered today in a student’s backpack at Houston County High School during an administrative search, according to school officials.

The weapon was confiscated, and the school has reassured parents and the community that all students and staff are safe.

41NBC inquired about the incident via email, asking the Houston County School District spokesperson, Jennifer Jones, for confirmation and further details.

Jones, who said she could only share the callout from Houston County Principal Jay Jones, said the district cannot discuss disciplinary actions taken against a student but that the district did follow its policies and procedures concerning weapons at school.

Here’s the call-out to parents and guardians from Houston County High School Principal Jay Jones:

“Good afternoon. This is Jay Jones, principal of Houston County High School. I’m calling to let you know that a firearm was found today during a search of a student’s backpack in the office. Please be assured that all students and staff are safe. School administrators and school resource officers took appropriate action to confiscate the weapon.”
