FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The final journey of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter commenced from Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus on Monday as a motorcade bearing her legacy passed through Peach County on its way to the Carter Presidential Library in Atlanta.

Carter’s body will lie in repose at the library Monday night before a tribute service on Tuesday in Atlanta and a funeral and interment in Plains on Wednesday.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better representative for our state and our southern hospitality than the two Carters,” Wendy Barton, the marketing and PR representative at Lane Southern Orchard in Fort Valley, said. “We were very saddened to hear of her death. It was a special treat for her to pass through Fort Valley, such a small town, but they were kind of neighbors just down the road in Plains, and she was just a lovely, lovely woman and represented us very well.”

Macon Area Habitat for Humanity has organized a memorial door signing as a tribute to Carter’s longstanding commitment to community service. The initiative honors the decades of dedication by Carter and her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, to the organization’s mission of building homes worldwide.

“Mrs. Carter led her advocacy work with strength but also with grace,” Macon Area Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Ivey Hall said. “She was a beautiful spirit that really looked out for the well-being of others, whether it was children, or families, or adults. Whether it was individuals who were sick or struggling with housing, she put service first in her life.”

The door signing event at Macon Area Habitat for Humanity started on Monday, November 27, and will continue until Friday, December 1. You can participate in the tribute from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at the main office on Holt Avenue. Following the signing period, the door will be permanently displayed in the Habitat Community Room.
