What’s Right With Our Schools: Teachers use ‘Data Teams’ to monitor students’ work in progress

HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Houston County school leaders are using extra time to make sure their students are not falling behind.

Second grade teacher Brittany Tackett says, “Our job is ongoing all the time. We never really get a chance to stop.”

Second grade teachers and administrators at Kings Chapel Elementary meet once a month during a planning period to review what students have learned and where they’re falling behind.

“We’re always making sure that we are doing what we are supposed to do to make sure that our kids get the best education that they need,” Tackett adds.

School leaders are collaborating and finding solutions to improve students’ work inside of the classroom.

Principal William Ray says, “We’re not waiting until the end of the year to see who was successful and who wasn’t. We’re able to see monthly how our students are progressing throughout the year.”

If teachers come across a stumbling block, there’s always someone to help. So they turn to each other.

Tackett explains, “My other second grade teachers would be like well this is what we’ve done in the past and it’s worked or we did this last year .”

Data teams allows teachers and administrators to work together, collect data, and use extra time to keep all students on the road to success.

“We’re one grade,one team, one school. We’re all one body together,” Tackett adds.

This is the third year data teams have been to help improve student achievements. Kings Chapel Elementary has some of the highest test scores in the district.
