What’s Right With Our Schools: Dublin students earn high school credits during the summer

DUBLIN, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Most kids look forward to the summer to attend summer camps or travel.

Several students in Dublin decided to continue their learning during summer school.

“It’s always new stuff to learn and when you come here, you get more stuff to learn and you’re also getting ahead,” says freshmen Jaylon Georges.

Some say the time spent doing the work is worth it.

“It makes me feel excited and anxious to just get ready to get started in August,” freshmen Khaila Vickers adds.

Usually students who attend summer school is trying to recover credit. But some freshmen who will be attending Dublin High School will already have two credits earned when they walk through
these doors in the fall.

Throughout the summer, students complete health and PE course work so once school starts back, they’ll be ahead of schedule.

CTAE Director Eric Cannada explains, “A lot of times when you’re in high school it’s pretty packed for
what you got to take from your freshmen year to your senior year. This is just giving them one way
of maybe getting into another class that they wouldn’t have had time for.”

Freshmen Brian Hall is involved in athletics. He says being able to earn these credits in the summer will give him free time to continue playing baseball and other sports.

“My parents always told academics first, shoot for academic scholarships. Athletics is a backup so I just wanted to come here and get my credits out the way and then I can do basketball later,” Hall adds.

About 15 students have taken advantage of this opportunity this summer.
